The Earth: An AICLE Unit.

Well, the end of this course is near... But before we finish, let me tell you a bit about the unit I have elaborated.

The Earth is a unit for Social Sciences (Geography), aimed at students on their first year of ESO. As you can see in the template of the unit, the pupils will work on these learning outcomes:
  1. Recognize the situation of our plant – the Earth- as part of the solar system.
  2. Analyse the reasons why life is possible on Earth.
  3. Know the most important features of the Earth: shape, size, structure and movements.
  4. Define the rotation and revolution movements and explain their consequences.
  5. Understand the cartographic representation of the Earth's surface, paying special attention to maps.
  6. Identify parallels and meridians
  7. Define longitude and latitude and locate a place on a map using geographical coordinates.
  8. Obtain geographical information from different written and visual documents (photographs, maps, graphs, pictures,...)
  9. Use and value maps as an important source of information.
  10. Use the specific vocabulary in an appropriate way.
This mind map- that they will complete in the last session- shows a summary of what the students will learn throughout the unit.

Working on different texts, videos, presentations,... we will work on both: content and language. The explanation of all the sessions (methodology, activities, links, ... ) can be seen here

And let's not forget about teaching them values. Oxfam brings us the opportunity to do so with some activities that work on our perception of the world showing how projections affect our view of the world.

At the end of the unit we will use the activities on Mapping our world to make our students revise some basic contents of the unit. They will reflect on the projections that are explained analysing their differences and - fostering their critical thinking- the consequences of those differences.
